WOUWHI Dance Interface
|
At the 2pm paper session today, we heard from Dr. Joseph Harchanko, who presented a pretty impressive system for translating dance into music and video control data. The system is called WOUWHI.
The Western Oregon Wireless Human Interface, or WOUWHI ... is an expressive wireless interface system designed for real-time creation of computer music and manipulation of video data. It was designed and built in collaboration between Scott Morse, ... Joseph Harchanko, ... and Sharon Oberst ... The WOUWHI allows for expanded freedom in the temporal decisions of the performer. It allows for more spatial freedom than previous systems by means of the wireless connection between the performer and the computer. It is an ideal system for concert performance, choreographed dance, and installations involving real-time computer audio and video.
The notes don't do it justice though. See it in action on the WOU website, or listen to Nadantha, a piece generated using the WOUWHI system.

I'm an idiot for asking this, but... Does this work with a console, or PC only?

arturogoga at 2008-04-27 23:05:27no custom radios on gta iv
awesome project! it's a shame GTA IV doesn't offer custom soundtracks on consoles, though (you can play em via the 360 dshboard, though). Maybe for the PC version, that'll change.

In response to the first comment: I tested it and it only works with the V2.03 Helen Keller device. I hope that helps.

evan at 2008-04-28 06:22:16really?
Oy, you guys are mean!
I'm hearing whisperings that the mp3 channel might not be supported out-of-the-box on the consoles. Still, it will be playable through the XMB on the 360, at the very least. There's a more authoritative discussion over in the destructoid thread.

Jerome at 2008-04-30 03:04:15Nice job!
Great idea, and what a brilliant way to get some exposure for the bands! Can't wait to download this and have a listen. It's a real shame R* dropped the ball on a custom MP3 channel. Probably best to stick this on during an extended in-game rampage, so as not to worry about it playing over any important mission-related speech. (Found your page through your comment on Wired btw.)

MP3 can be played on PC and consoles...
With the release of 3.40 Firmware update of the PS3, there will probably be custom radio on the PS3.

past gta games weren't easily modded, are you for real? google real theft auto or multi theft auto, the gta mod scene is huge!

CameO73 at 2008-11-29 05:49:35Thanks very much!
Gonna buy GTA IV next week and this'll help me pass the time. Definitely going to add it to the built-in radio stations! Great work, thanks!

the7k at 2008-12-07 00:31:37Not just for GTA!
Thanks for this awesome track! I remember a techno radio station made after GTAIII came to the PC, and haven't heard anything after that; glad to see it brought back.
While I don't have GTA4, I have used this while playing Burnout Paradise, and it fits very well. I'm sure there are other games it should fit well in.

UK_John at 2009-02-22 17:16:01Thanks!
Funnily enough, I ripped the GTA Vice City radio stations and converted them to mp3 to put in my GTA IV Independent Radio, and they are all about an hour long too! So you actually got it spot on!
Well done for doing this, and I hope at least some of the bands get a few new fans as reward for allowing this! You will have to tell us what they thought of the whole thing and the end result!
Coming from London, England, your 'radio station' comes across really good as an 'American radio station'- and you have a good 'radio voice'!!! :)
By randomizing the mp3's, I never know what station I am going to listen to when I switch to Independent Radio, so in a way, I see it as my 'satellite radio switch' that gets me stations via the small satellite dish in the back of each car! :)
