New Music Monday - Improvisation on Bioshock

Great books have the power to inspire. Great films have the power to inspire. Still, there are many who would not give the same power to videogames. I am not one of those people. This week I am presenting two pieces that I improvised after finishing Bioshock.

The city of Rapture
The first piece is a piano improvisation. It is a portrait of Rapture. It is a musical expression of the feelings that Rapture arouses. The idea of a lost paradise. The idea of an unattainable utopia.

The second piece is a tape piece. It is a pretty standard tape piece that is not necessarily innovative. One statement I wanted to make in this piece is that videogames are art as much as novels or movies. So this piece employs a technique called phasing. It's not a new technique, by any means, but I wanted to juxtapose a high art technique with sounds sampled from something that is often not considered artistic at all: a videogame.
