My Wiimote Drum Kit v1.0

The latest version of my wiimote drum kit adds nunchuk support to the program. It is now even easier to use than before.

What you will need to run it (assuming you have a windows XP pc):
1. Wiimote
2. bluetooth adapter
3. The software
And that's pretty much it. You may also need .Net2.0, but most people should already have it.

After you run through the installer, make sure that you connect your wiimote before starting the application. Connecting the wiimote can be tricky, and I've found that the best way to connect is to go to My Bluetooth Places and run the Bluetooth Setup Wizard in the upper left hand corner. Start the wizard, click Next, specify Human Interface Device, click show all devices, select the wiimote, click next ... and there you go.

Also, you have to connect the nunchuk after you start the application, or the application won't know it's there (I'm working on this).

wiimote drum kit

This is version 1.0, but I still plan to add more features, and I still haven't had a ton of time to debug.

Let me know what you think about it in the comments section. If you make anything neat, link us to a youtube video.

Also, credit needs to go to Brian Peek, who wrote the code for getting wiimote data from the wiimote.

Degeneratemoo at 2007-05-19 13:03:41Cool
Looks really cool, would be better if you have the option to use 2 wiimotes or the wiimote and nunchuck (2 wiimotes would be better but dunno if they would both connect via bluetooth at the same time?) to represent the two sticks.
Degeneratemoo at 2007-05-19 13:22:37Well
It looks cool, but not working for me, it says: Error in the application. -2147287038 (Unknown) at Microsoft.DirectX.DirectSound.Buffer.CreatebufferFromFile(String filename, BufferDescription desc, Device parent) at Microsoft.DirectX.DirectSound.SecondaryBuffer..ctor(String filename, BufferDescription desc, Device parent) at WiiDrumsEXM.soundbank.sound..ctor(String f, Device d, Int32 numbytes) Whew! Shame really, as really wanna give it a go. Wiimote is connected (and flashing).
Degeneratemoo at 2007-05-19 13:23:40
Sorry, forgot to say it gives the same error about 5 times in a row, the error pops up when I select one of the presets.
evan at 2007-05-19 17:26:46screenshot
Degeneraternoo, could you email me a screenshot?
evan at thisisnotalabel dot com
I will totally debug it for you. And thanks, btw, for letting me know

evan at 2007-05-19 17:32:36DirectX
Actually, degenerater, the error is probably because you don't have the latest version of directx installed.
get it here

scottgintheuk at 2007-05-20 11:20:55Not working for me
Hi All

I get the same error message as Degeneraernoo as described above... My message also appears 5 times in sucession and I have downloaded the latest Directx (ver 10). Hope to have it working soon

Degeneratemoo at 2007-05-20 11:23:44
DirectX 10 is Vista only, I'm running XP and thus v9.0c. Also, the directX files included within the drum zip file are from 9.0c as they are the same file version numbers. E-mail sent in a mo Evan.
evan at 2007-05-20 13:20:32Sound Card

OK, the problem might be with the default output device on your computers. I'm going to put in some code for catching this error, and we will go from there.

Thanks to everyone who is helping me debug! I appreciate it!

evan at 2007-05-20 14:07:44OK
Problem should be fixed. Try that download link again.
evan at 2007-05-20 16:08:58Fixed Filenames
OK, I fixed the filename issue in the presets. Get the new installer for the fix.
blop at 2007-05-21 08:29:12So can you do it?
Like someone asked above, wouldn't it be better if you could connect two wiimotes (or a wiimote and nunchuk) that way it would be more like drums? Is this planned for a future update? Or is this not possible? Also, if I buy a 15 dollar bluetooth adapter instead of a 30 dollar one, should everything still work? What will I be missing? Thank you, I hope I will be able to get this running asap!
blop at 2007-05-21 08:30:35Net 2.0
just unzipped folders and clicked install, and it said i didn't have net 2.0. I like to know what I am getting before I install something, so can you tell me what it is? Once again, thank you.
evan at 2007-05-21 09:36:02.Net 2.0

.Net 2.0 is just a microsoft package required to run .Net apps.

I am going to add nunchuk support tonight. I will probably have a version with nunchuk support some time wednesday.

blop at 2007-05-21 09:38:27Sounds great!
I guess I'll wait till the nunchuk is ready before i install then.....
bfb at 2007-05-24 13:38:28Thanks.
Nice work, I can feel RSI coming on already! It'd be really nice if you made the 1 & 2 buttons work as toggle sample play on/off, rather than retriggering. Having a bit of trouble so far actually making anything that sounds like a coherent beat, but having fun doing so! I don't think I'll be selling my V-drums just yet, though...
evan at 2007-05-24 16:43:40it's tough
Getting 'coherent beats' out of the instrument takes a bit of practice, but if you start with the basics and build up, then it only takes an hour or so to be making coherent beats.
wolf69 at 2007-05-27 04:42:53How to configure the nunchuk?
My wiimote work great with your tool, but i can't find how to ocnfigure the nunchunk (associate beat to a move like the wiimote!) so i c'ant use my nunchunk! i have another problem, i cant select a preset i have an error here is the 1st line of the error : System.InvalidCastException: Conversion from string "-2.9" to type 'Double' is not valid. ---> System.FormatException: Input string was not in a correct format. Thnaks!
evan at 2007-05-27 11:24:48Plug it in After Program Starts
You have to plug the nunchuk in after the program starts. I know that's obnoxious, but I have to rewrite a bit of the DLL to get it to work appropriately, and that's going to take me a bit.
wolf69 at 2007-06-01 04:59:08
But where can i configure the beat for the nunchuk?
evan at 2007-06-01 13:03:29in the GUI
There is a panel in the GUI for configuring the nunchuk sound, however, the nunchuk onlu supports a downward stroke.
big fire at 2007-06-01 20:43:45Need help
When I try to add my wiimote to the blue tooth adapter, the light just keeps flashing, and when I go to play wii drums it says that there is no wii mote. What should I do?
gumby at 2007-06-02 14:18:45New Version
Are you still working on this? I have had alot of fun using it but would like it even more versatile. I have used several scripts with glovepie and they have great versatility, but the timing is not as good as yours. I was hoping for more toms and sounds. Any plans for 2 remotes as well. Thanks again for the fun. Also, what is the retriger function. I have not been able to figure it out. Auxillary samples dont seem to work properly either, they just repeat. Brian
evan at 2007-06-03 14:12:56Further development

I am still working on this, but you can load whatever samples you want into the program right now. For instance, you could load a tom where I have the cymbal crash.

Big Fire: It sounds like your wiimote is connected. Try connecting via windows, rather than blue soleil (if that's what you're using). Also, make sure you are using the Bluetooth setup wizard in the upper left corner of the windows bluetooth page.

gumby at 2007-06-03 16:24:23Buttons
For instance, with one of the glovepie scripts, you can use the +, -, and HOME buttons to do a low, medium, and high tom. On the nunchuk with that same script, I can move the top analog stick to make the tom sounds as well. The C and Z button are also functional as a crash or snare. I was hoping that you would continue what you are doing and just expand the functionality. I still cannot use the retrigger function yet. On another glovepie script he made it to where there are 2 wiimotes and 2 nunchuks. The second set you can strap to your leg and use them for kick bass. Really neat effect and more realistic. I hope yours can do this at some later date. Like I mentioned, yours has the best and most realistic timing, I would just like it a little more versatile. Oh yea, one gripe on the tom that is configured to the B button. You can not hit it very often. You must delay a couple of seconds before being able to use it again. Maybe just the length of the wav file, if so I can edit it. Thanks, Brian
wolf69 at 2007-06-04 03:08:09
Sorry but i didn't see the dongle for configure the nunchuk... Even seeing your image above i don't see anywhere to confirure it!
evan at 2007-06-04 10:37:30old image

The above image is old. In the current version of the program, you can set the threshold for the nunchuk, but you have to attach the nunchuk after the program starts.

GUMBY: OK OK OK! I will make your button controls happen later this week (maybe tonight, if I have time).

gumby at 2007-06-04 17:48:19Buttons
Thanks, didnt make it seem like I was raggin on ya, but your program has so much potential, I would hate to see it go to waste. Are you familiar with the scripts I was talking about from racyno? //-- Drums with 2 Wiimotes et 2 Nunchuk for one person //-- with sounds at the same time, rumble and leds and Bob Somers? Those were the ones I was referring to. Gumby

How do i get a Strong Radio Signal Strength ? rightnow im geting not weak bot not eaven good in my status is there anything i can do to inprove the signal im also pretty close from the bluetooth transmiter. Thank U all PeacE!
gumby at 2007-06-06 09:54:25Wiimote Position
Hey Evan, I noticed that when you hit the hi hat that all you have to do is turn the wiimote sideways to the left like a real drummer would and not use any buttons. This means that you are able to use the wiimotes positioning ability. Could you do the same, say for a cymbal crash up to the right? Or the toms over to the right? Same for the nunchuk? Using the buttons is great, but it would be much more natural and fun if we could visualize the drums in front of us and just have to hit in that area. I dont ask for much do I :) I saw the videos from E3 and that is how it appeared the 2 drummers were doing it. Gumby
evan at 2007-06-06 10:14:27E3 video was a lie

There is no 'positioning ability' on wiimotes. All you get is sensors in 3 dimensions (X, Y, and Z). So, knowing exactly where a wiimote is located is pretty tough.

Imagine being blindfolded and led into an elevator. When the elevator moves, you will be able to feel if it goes up or down, and you will be able to guess about how far. If the building has 100 floors though, accurately predicting which floor you arrive at is next to impossible. Now imagine doing that in 3 dimensions.

They faked it for the E3 show. They had a specific system set up and only allowed people who knew the system to use it. It looked like they were using 'positioning', but they were just using subtle gestures.

In short, I may try to do some positions stuff, but it may be too much work for me to make something that really works the way you want it to work.

RE: signal strength. Replace your Wiimote's batteries, buy a better bluetooth adapter.

gumby at 2007-06-06 11:37:01E3 Video
Did not realize that about the video. But since you can tilt the wiimote to the left (+X axis I think) for a hi hat, and a snare is in the down (-Z axis I think), couldn't you do a tilt to the right (-X axis I think) to be a crash, or something along those line? Gumby
evan at 2007-06-06 11:57:03Yes
Yes, you could tilt to the right to do that. The only issue there is that it create issues for the backswing that occurs when you hit the hihat. So you would have to set the threshold especially high. I took this option out because I thought that it would only make the thing harder to use.
gumby at 2007-06-06 13:57:28OK
Great, at least I know you were thinking ahead and about all of us :) Doesn't the nunchuk have motion tilt sensing as well? If so, any ideas of how to implement this? Gumby
big fire at 2007-06-08 10:34:35Yay
Thank you for your help in making it work. This is a really great system, and is really fun. Although right now I sound like a five year old with a drum

Unfortunately, all I can really say is that you need to make sure that you really have it connected. Windows can be confusing. Also, you may wan to make sure that you connect it as a Human Interface Device (mouse or keyboard) and that you are using the "Bluetooth Setup Wizard" in the upper-left corner of the bluetooth page.

facingdoubt at 2007-06-20 21:45:32Wiimote will connect to Bluetooth, program won't recognize it.
After many tries, I was able to get my wiimote to connect to bluetooth and now that I figured out the process, the Wii Play the Drums.exe will not recognize the wiimote. I've done everything I can think of. The error I received says "Unhandled exception has occured in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will close immediately. Wiimote not found. If also gives details, then Continue, or quit. If you click continue the application appears but does nothing. Any ideas from anyone? Thanks, Michael (facingdoubt)
evan at 2007-06-21 19:50:10wish I could help

I'm not sure what I can do. On every computer that I can test it on, it works. I saw in that screenshot that you did have the remote connected... I am going to forward this conversation to Brian Peek, who wrote the wiimote wrapper, maybe he knows something.

evan at 2007-06-21 19:56:19Try This

Brian has a new version of his wiimote dll out. Try dropping this file in the Wii Play the Drums folder, overwriting the one that is currently in there.

http://www.thisisnotalabel.com/wiidrumkit/WiimoteLib.dll

I have not tested it, but Brian says that it fixes a few issues. Let me know if it helps.

facingdoubt at 2007-06-21 20:14:44Mine works now...
FYI. I got mine to work. Run Windows Update and make sure you have the latest .net framework updates. Luckily for me a I have 4 wiimotes and the 2nd one worked. So either the 2nd wiimote or the .net framework worked for me. Really it's more patience than anything... Don't be afraid to tinker around, it will work if you want it bad enough!!! lol. Nice program Evan and Brian! If you need any help with anything contact me at the email address on my profile. Also, definitely tweak to thresholds... It makes all the difference in the world and if the nunchuck stops works you are either out of range on the threshhold or reset the preset (switch from NiceKit to the DOc or vice versa) and that will also fix some drop out issues. Thanks, Michael (facingdoubt)

1. Did you connect the nunchuk? 2. Did you pick a kit from the preset drop down? 3. Did you adjust the thresholds? - Michael
DrRobot at 2007-06-23 11:32:27yep
yes to all of them. do you think it's because my lights on the wiimote are turning off? is there a small prgram i get to test my wiimote real quick to ensure that it's working?

Snypez at 2008-02-10 20:48:30Sound does not work
Hey guys. I have the same problem that many have posted about before. I can run the program fine, but there is no sound. I believe I'm doing everything correctly....I pair the wiimote first. I have DirectX 9.0c installed. I have the DirectX SDK installed, etc... I DON'T get the error that the wiimote is not connected when starting the program, so I don't think that's the problem. I select a drum kit from the drop down, hit save....and still no sound. I can get Bob Somer's drum program to work without problems. But yours is 100 times better. Has anyone figured out the 'no sound' problem?
Snypez at 2008-02-10 20:52:14Also...
Hey guys, one more question. Do I HAVE to have a nunchuk connected to get this program to work with sound? That's the only thing I haven't tried yet. I don't have a nunchuk yet. Can someone that has this working already try it without a nunchuk and see if that's the problem everyone is having? Thanks!
Snypez at 2008-02-10 21:06:33One more question
Will this program work with the Linksys software? I'm not sure what 'stack' that is. in other words, I can get every other Wiimote program to work with the default Linksys software but this one. Some programs state that they cannot run with the Microsoft stack drivers, and that Bluesolei has to be used. Does Bluesolei have to be used with Evan's drum program? I just don't know, the lights on my wiimote flash BEFORE running the program. Once the program is launched, they all stop flashing and shut off. From what I read, this is 'normal', and means that the wiimote is paired correctly
Snypez at 2008-02-11 05:36:40Wii Guitar works
Hmmm...I just tried out your Wii Guitar and that works without any problems. That works with my Linksys software, and everything else I already listed that I have. I close out of Wii Guitar, open Wii Drums, and no sound. I tried adjusting thresholds, still no sound. I set my sound output in Drums to match what worked in Guitar, and still no sound....
Snypez at 2008-02-11 05:58:45Version 0.98?
I wonder if there's an issue with the download for Wii Drums. When I run the program at the top it says "Wii Play the Drums v0.98 by Evan X Merz". Shouldn't this be version 1.0?
Snypez at 2008-02-13 18:28:25Got it working!!
OK, for those of you that can run the app without an error but get no sound, here's the secret. You need to have a nunchuk. 1. Connect your wiimote via Bluetooth. 2. Open the drum program with your nunchuk UNPLUGGED. 3. Plug in your nunchuk. 4. Select a drum kit from the drop down box. 5. Start swinging the controllers and you should now hear sounds. I didn't have to hit 'save' or change the sound output at all. I'm using onboard sound just as an FYI. So just remember, you have to have a nunchuk to get this to work!!! Even if you 'disable' the nunchuk in the program, it still won't work. You have to use the nunchuk. Thanks!
Jildert at 2008-02-15 11:23:44Help me plz!!
ystem.ArgumentOutOfRangeException: Value of '-390' is not valid for 'Value'. 'Value' should be between 'Minimum' and 'Maximum'. Parameter name: Value at TrackBar.set_Value This is the irritating message that i get, and the Wii isnt flashing anymore, so thats wierd, i think.... if you can help me add me on MSN jildert_dejonge (at) hotmail (dot) com, or just mail me at pipoja (at) gmail (dot) com (yup im dutch)
Gizmo at 2008-02-16 03:56:57Regional settings
Hi all. Jildert, can I guess that your Windows is not in English language? The important part is the one related to the decimal separator character. If you are not using the dot as decimal separator, the program fails to parse the values that come in the "default" presets. You can edit them manually, with something like notepad, and change the dots with your decimal separator. Apart from that I have been able to run the program under Windows Vista, by getting the code and recompiling it using the last release of the WiimoteLib 1.2.1.0. Only two minor changes are needed to do so (Change the name of two event handlers)
gumby at 2008-02-25 14:26:54Hello Evan
Any chance of putting some time back into this project? It was going really great :)
Kolodziejboy at 2008-02-25 17:57:34@gameking66
I figured it out on my friend's computer, I think it is something with my dongle. And yeah I do know about computers

i connect wiimote and nunchuk but the program don't work ;-(
ktm at 2008-03-06 18:50:37thanks gumby
once I decided to take up the space to put vb.net back on my computer, I changed the wiimote lib to the current one and fixed the two names by deleting the on's and it worked perfectly. thanks!
at 2008-03-21 04:11:52Converted to C#
Thanks Evan, I converted the project to C# and to make use of the latest WiiMoteLib. Also there is no need to reconnect the nunchuck after the program starts. For those who are interested the source code and the installer are available here: WiiDrumsEXM_CS.zip
wiiguy22 at 2008-03-21 06:54:59Anyone willing to fix this?
There are some problems with this software. Well the problem is with the older version of wiimotelib.dll. The never one works better but some of the function names have been changed. If someone with vb.net would change the function calls to work with newer wiimotelib.dll and compile the software and put it online I would be very thankfull? Maybe you KTM? :)

#forz at 2008-03-21 08:52:04RE: Anyone willing to fix this?
Why not try the C# version I posted today (see:WiiDrumsEXM_CS.zip). That one works with the latest version of wiimotelib.dll.
gumby at 2008-03-31 11:15:39
Thanks for the update, seems to work well. I did have a couple of issues. I was able to get the left arrow reprogrammed to a sound that I wanted, but I could not get the C button reprogrammed with the nunchuk. Also, what exactly does the Retrigger do? Would there be a way to add in functionality for the A button and a downward strike with the remote? Similar to the B button and the cymbal crash. Thanks again, Gumby
gumby at 2008-03-31 11:27:12Requested Features
I tried using the Button 1 and Button 2, but the sounds I attached to them just repeated really fast. I could tap them real light and sometimes get the right sound, but normally they sounded like they went into a quick distorted loop. Also, another feature request :) Since we can already use our hi hats when we tilt the remote to the left, would their be a way to add tilting to the right for, say a crash or other sound? Gumby
evan at 2008-03-31 19:36:12other thread

hey guys, I would appreciate it if you put code suggestions in the source code thread, which is a little more manageable. Sorry I haven't been able to work on this ... too busy applying to grad school and everything. I'm going to have 3 weeks off between when I quit my job and when I start grad school, and I am going to use the time to make a better version of this. That will be this summer.

In response to your question, Gumby, no, you can't map something to tilting the remote right, because it would trigger every time you swung the wiimote upwards when it is tilted to the left (every hihat up-stroke).

gumby at 2008-04-06 17:25:08
I see your point on the right tilt, but what if you make the threshold very high, and adjustable of course, to compensate for this. Gumby

CJ at 2008-04-12 07:15:23Bluetooth setup wizard?
I got my wiimote connected but ever time i enter the program it says "Wiimote not found, unable to locate wiimote. Try one of your other wiimotes. System.Exception: Wiimote not found. at WiimoteLIb.Wiimote.Connect() at wiiDrumsEXM.frmWiiDrums.Form1_load(object sender,EventArgs e)" So I read some of the comments and I saw you guys talking about Bluetooth setup wizard, i didnt do that, i have no idea where it is, its not in the upper left hand corner of my bluetooth screen, and im pretty sure thats my problem.
